After 35 years in the Foreign Service, I retired in 1995. My first assignment was to the American Embassy in Mexico City, where I met and married Julieta Rovirosa Argudin (we have 4 children). My subsequent postings abroad were to African countries, three times as ambassador (to Somalia, Tanzania, and Sudan). After I left the Foreign Service, the State Department recalled me three times—twice to take charge of embassies and once to chair an international commission.
Westview Press published my first book, Inside Sudan, in 1999. In 2002 Westview also published my next book, Revolution in Zanzibar. Outskirts Press published my latest book, Old Man on a Bicycle, in June 2014.
