For more than 35 years, Kendall Svengalis has been the nation’s leading advocate for legal information consumers facing an oligopolistic legal publishing industry. He has been described as “a prophet who has the courage to speak the truth about legal publishing.” Since 1996, his award-winning annual Legal Information Buyer’s Guide & Reference Manual, which has been described as “hands-down the most useful book on legal information every written,” has saved budget-strapped law libraries across the country millions of dollars. In 1998, it received the coveted Joseph L. Andrews Legal Literature Award from the American Association of Law Libraries. In this new, groundbreaking book, he turns his bibliographical and consumer expertise to the legal self-help literature designed to save laypersons from the high cost of legal services.
Kendall Svengalis is a graduate of Purdue University (B.A. English literature; M.A. American history); and the University of Rhode Island (M.L.S.), and has done additional graduate work at brown University. He served as Rhode Island State Law Librarian from 1982-2002 and taught law librarianship at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Library & Information Studies from 1985 to 2004. His Legal Information Buyer’s Guide & Reference Manual (New England LawPress) has been published annually since 1996. He also published Gary, Indiana: A Centennial Celebration (Duneland Press), a work that has been described as “the definitive history” of his hometown, and authored two historical vocabulary-building novels: Conspiracy on the Housatonic, and The Great Emerson Art Heist (Duneland Press). He is also president of New England LawPress and Duneland Press.
