Cast Your Footsteps
In the intricate tapestry of our family's history, a resilient thread weaves across generations—a thread forged by the indomitable spirit of a woman born in the waning days of the late 19th century. Today, I stand humbled and honored, tasked with transforming my grandmother's remarkable typewritten chronicle into the living, breathing manuscript that now rests in your hands. With a heart brimming with emotion, I extend to you a heartfelt invitation to embark on a journey—a poignant odyssey through the life and times of an extraordinary woman, my grandmother. Born on March 23, 1896, Agnes Mae Geisenhoner, nee Russell, came into the world at a time when horse-drawn carriages still echoed through cobblestone streets. She stands as a testament to the idea that greatness transcends gender and the limitations of any era. Agnes was a trailblazer, an indomitable force, a woman whose adventurous spirit and unquenchable curiosity defied the constraints of her time. In her words, written with the same fervor that ignited her existence, you will encounter an explorer, a daredevil unafraid of venturing into uncharted territories. This book is more than a mere collection of words on paper; it is a vessel of emotions that flowed from her heart onto the pages. As you read, you will be transported through her life and the lives of her family—a life that bore witness to the transition from horse-drawn carriages to the roar of engines, from the serene days of trolleys to the tumultuous backdrop of two world wars. It was a life etched against the canvas of historic upheavals—the Great Depression, the distant echoes of battles, and the unwavering spirit of a nation finding its footing. Through her narratives, cities and towns come alive, with names that resonate even as they adopt the shroud of fiction. Among the many places she traversed were Wilmington, DE, Philadelphia, Wildwood, NJ, Pennington, NJ, Schenectady, NY, and Corinth, NY. While these locations may take on different names within these pages, their essence, their soul, remains unchanged. You will feel the warm sands of Wildwood's beaches beneath your feet, taste the salt carried by the ocean breeze, and hear the echoes of laughter from eras long past. But this book is not a mere recollection of events; it offers a glimpse into the heart of a master storyteller. Through her words, she beckons us to step into her shoes, to experience the world through her eyes—a world where family held paramount importance, where love and care intertwined to craft a tapestry of memories impervious to the eroding forces of time. Today, I am immensely proud to present to you the legacy of our beloved grandmother, fondly known to all as 'grandmom,' Agnes Mae Russell. It is a tribute to a woman who defied societal norms, who embraced the unknown with open arms, and whose enduring legacy lights our path even in the darkest of hours. We are finally fulfilling her long-held wish—eighty years later, Agnes had meticulously typed her story into four separate manuscripts, hoping that one day it would be published. That day has now arrived. In a poignant nod to history, this book is being published on her wedding anniversary to Albert Geisenhoner, on September 20th. They were married a hundred and six years ago, on September 20th, 1917. This book is a labor of love, a celebration of a life well-lived, and a testament to the enduring power of storytelling. Join us on this journey through time and memory, as we cast a light on the remarkable life of Agnes Mae Russell, our beloved grandmother, in 'Cast Your Footsteps.'

California Bookwatch - MidWest Book Review

It's not unusual to pay tribute to bygone years and a family member via publishing their writings. What deserves special note in Cast Your Footsteps is its vigorous and uplifting notes of just why Agnes Mae Geisenhoner proved such a lasting force in her family and, via her words here, to the world.

Her granddaughter, who persevered in bringing her grandmother's gift to publishing fruition, explains her motivations for this pursuit. The tapestry of family experiences and history is woven upon the choices, stands, and commitments of prior generations whose leadership can prove a beacon to not just the family, but those outside its borders. These examples rarely come to light with such an enthusiastic display of experience, which is one of the hallmarks of this story.

The account reads with the drama of fiction, and also captures the major turning points, influences, and choices of a woman whose wish to have her words published was thwarted by running out of time to choose a publisher. From her early formative years as a 1800s farm daughter to the evolution of her love of history and family and her firm convictions that the underdog deserved respect and support in the wider world, Agnes Mae Geisenhoner represents not just the influences of the past, but the moral and ethical drives which honed her choices.

Her granddaughter only knew her for twenty years of that life, so discovering this written legacy (Cast Your Footsteps) provided a treasure trove of knowledge that assumes additional relevance and power when sent into the wider reading world for outside eyes to absorb. Family ties and times come to life through Geisenhoner's observations, from group fishing trips and the many places she visited and lived in to the encounters and relationships she cultivated, which were changed by the mettle of her convictions and growth.

History also comes to life under Geisenhoner's experiences. Family relationships assume three-dimensional form while the social issues which form from her convictions are powerfully captured in a manner modern audiences will well understand.

More so than most memoirs, Cast Your Footsteps is a tribute to not just a grandmother, but her family's lives and love. The multifaceted life and talents of this woman and the juxtaposition of family-growing moments with life-changing events makes for a powerful tribute that should be part of any book club discussion of family legacies.

Genealogy groups, in particular, will be fascinated with the idea of how living history is created from family ties generations later. Cast Your Footsteps is also highly recommended for libraries interested in accessible, appealing, powerful stories of bygone eras and the people who lived, loved, and celebrated their moments.

"To the strong and tenacious women who walked the path paved by Agnes, may her legacy be a beacon of courage and empowerment. She blazed a trail for independence and resilience, qualities that have been imprinted on our lineage, and for that, we are eternally grateful."

"Maybe folks did not have enough food to give them the strength to fight for these rights. In that case, then the government should step in and help build up their strength, so that they could fight back. For how could God allow a country to prosper, when that country had no compassion on its poor? But everyone seemed to fold their hands (especially the ones who had full and plenty) and say, “Well I’d like to help but there is not much that one person could do; so why worry?” Maybe there wasn’t’ much that one person could do alone. But if they united, certainly they could do something."
