Five Fathoms Beneath is a dramatic work of fiction written by author J.R. Alcyone. The central plot focuses on overcoming darkness and results in a life affirming message, but the central themes of deep depression and suicide are likely to upset some readers and are therefore worthy of a trigger warning. When Ambrose Serafeim suffers by the unexpected actions of his father, his life seems devastated enough, but then a horrific accident in a running race takes Ambrose on another life-threatening turn. It’s up to Brose whether he follows in his father’s footsteps, even into extreme tragedy, or finds a new path to forge into a positive new life.
J.R. Alcyone writes with fluid prose and serious heart in recounting this tale of medical drama, family obligations and dealing with the darker side of life and death. Ambrose is a complex character who, at first, doesn’t seem to be open to the wider existential realism of life, and is very concerned with his here and now and the legacy of his father, the renowned pediatric heart surgeon. But once he goes through his awakening in the face of what life can unexpectedly throw at you, the mental journey is extremely well described, both relatable and harrowing to read. Overall, Five Fathoms Beneath gives just a dash of supernatural belief to a compelling contemporary story with real dramas that test the mettle of the human condition, and it is a highly recommended read for drama fans.
