Katy Rose Likes to Say No
Delin Colon, author and illustrator

Children/Young Adult; General Fiction (including literary and historical); (Market)

Katy Rose Likes to Say No is about a child, like most, who is just learning to assert her independence and discovering her power over others, simply by saying “no.” She finds, however, that defying her parents and being rude to her friend only make herself feel bad. Katy Rose eventually discovers that cooperation and kindness make others happy and that they, in turn, are more nurturing toward her. This book is for every parent who, while realizing the importance of this developmental stage, suffers the exasperation of constantly hearing “no.” The illustrations are cut-paper art and were created by rearranging the same 127 randomly cut pieces of construction paper. At the end of the book are instructions on how to create such art projects with your child.

Katy Rose Likes to Say NO! is a darling rhyming tale about a little girl who's favorite word is no.

Katy Rose doesn't realize how much her word choice hurts the ones she loves until she almost loses her friend. Can Katy Rose expand her vocabulary with new words that will bring joy to those around her before she hurts anyone else?

As a mother of four I have certainly heard my share of "no's" and can certainly identify with Katy Rose's parents. I know toddlers like to express their independence and this story is a great example of that. The author also does a wonderful job of teaching children what can happen with they choose to use positive words and do as their parents ask.

The illustrations are original and engaging. The fact that they are created from the same randomly cut 127 pieces of construction paper absolutely amazes me. I found myself trying to figure out where each piece from the previous illustration was used in the next.

Katy Rose Likes to Say NO! is a sweet and beautifully illustrated tale that both parents and children will enjoy.

I recommend picking up a copy.

Having read Delin Colón’s Rasputin and the Jews: A Reversal of History, I was pleasantly surprised when she gave me a copy of her latest book, a children’s book called Katy Rose Likes to Say NO! Colon, a clinical psychologist, has done a wonderful job at capturing the essence of a two year old who asserts her independence by saying, screaming the word NO whenever she is asked or told do something. A parent who reads this little book to their child will be teaching a value lesson in how one should behave. Even though there is a lesson in values, the book does not moralize, making it a useful tool for different belief systems. An extra bonus is the cut-out-paper art work that graces the book. Colón, who is also the illustrator, explains how it is done, thus providing a hands on project for parents and child to do together.

I loved this little gem of a book. The combination of words and illustrations captures a 2 year old completely. The cut-out illustrations are brilliant! A book for any and every child. And what a perfect opportunity to include reading time with arts and crafts. I've also read her Rasputin and the Jews: A Reversal of History, which is a fascinating read. In Katy Rose Likes To Say No! we see her create a book for a 2 year old, which she does exquisitely. Delin Colon is quite a talent.

Just bought four copies to send to each of my nieces and nephews to read to their kids. I expect they'll love it as much as I do.
