LITTLE BRAVEBIRD and the Grandparents' Gifts
Little Bravebird and the Grandparent's Gifts is fiction, and, like the classics, for both children, youth and grown-ups. Its is historical fiction in that there are parallel stories: one that of Little Bravebird's Navaho and French - American grandparents, WWII and the Navaho Code-Talkers and life after that; the other, a coming of age story of their orphaned grandson, Little Bravebird, age 5, who, through struggling with learning, and in particular, reading has an awesome memory and is, in the idiom, "street smart." His grandparents draw on their own life experiences to help him discover "how" he learns, and encourages him with stories of their life experiences, and learning games - from how to catch a fish, to how to ask for help when it is needed. Walk with Little Bravebird through his childhood, and growing up years, until adulthood, when, although his grandparents are gone, the "gifts" they gave him have seen him become both a teacher, a writer, a husband, and, like his grandfather, a warrior. Heartfelt, historical, amusing, sad, tragic, and overcoming. A coming-of-age story of a New Mexico Pueblo family.
