SnowPoems
SnowPoems is a book of related poems that explores the cultural and historical landscape of an era rife with the potential for death and renewal – basically the three score and ten years following World War II, when the horrors of the Holocaust and Hiroshima hid behind the blue skies of space exploration and the viridian-screen of computer/cinema simulation. A work comprised of fifty-two poems with a four-section poetic narrative that weaves them into a life, the life of a generation, based on symbolic aspects of snow – aspects deeply embedded in the experience of the late twentieth century and the early wars of the twenty-first. It’s the unfolding of a symbolic tale of snows that encompasses the range of human emotion, from the scorched fields of memory still lit with the charred remains of civil rights marches, war protests and Establishment enmity, to the green shoots of social survival emerging from the burnt landscapes of ideological conflict. A time poignantly touched in the beginning by ideas of relevance and human values, while it tried to embrace those of revolution, early death, anomie, and innocence. A time without peace but shrouded in beauty nonetheless.

To be savored slowly, like fine cognac.

These poems combine observation with introspection in a compelling way. And the subjects are definitely not confined to winter landscapes; they include all sorts of conditions and situations, though all the poems refer to snow in some way at least once. A thought or an event or a place triggers a dense cloud of associations that the author deploys into packed lines that encourage slow and reflective reading. You never know what might lurk on the next page: a body bag found in Africa or "Christmas Among Atheists" to cite one title. This is a thoughtful volume from an author of wide experience.
