Stolen America
Jonathan Land Evans, editor (anthology)
A new, scholarly edition of a nowadays rare 1890 novel by Isobel Henderson Floyd. The story takes place amongst leisured guests at the Princess Hotel in the quiet, idyllic resort of Bermuda during the late 1880s. A romantic Victorian comedy-of-manners with a side order of blackmail and geopolitics, the novel is interesting for its period detail of Bermuda's early tourism days, as well as being a diverting piece of entertainment. Please note, however, that the novel is 130 years old and reflects the attitudes of its own era, including in matters of race and gender. This all-new edition includes dozens of helpful explanatory annotations, as well as an essay about the novel, by the Bermudian writer and historian Jonathan Land Evans, who is also the book's publisher. As with all of his books, Mr. Evans charges no royalties, so that the book is as inexpensive as possible. The 290-page hardback is available exclusively from Lulu.com, and sells for $14.30 at full price (although there is quite often a discount offered by Lulu through its website, by means of a discount code to be entered when purchasing the book).
