I originally bought this for my son, but after reading it with him, I think everyone would benefit from spending time with Coco. Through beautifully illustrated pages, Coco’s adventure highlights how imperative kindness and understanding are in this crazy world. By teaching us that differences should be applauded and embraced, not shunned and feared, Super CoCo is the literal embodiment of the perfect book for all ages.

Fantastic book celebrating multiple things - 1 - don't give up 2 - we don't have to look alike, do the same things or be from the same place to make wonderful friendships and learn from each other and have a great time! and 3 - that even if you made a bad call (in this case, saying no to a friendship request simply because Coco wasn't 'like them') you can go back and give it a shot - we can always start over and be better and happier because of it! Must read this one - and enjoy all the great art - really brings the story to life!

I purchased this book for my little ones after a friend sent me a recommendation. My 4yr old loves the illustrations and will ask questions after listening to the story. My 8yr old is always willing to read the book to her younger brother at bedtime. I believe when he asks questions about inclusion of everyone and after hearing her answers they both benefit from the story.
As for myself and my wife, we appreciate the attention to detail and positive message that the story provides. It is very well written and the illustrations assist nicely in taking you on a trip to Aruba.

A fantastic story about friendships and acceptance of friends no matter our differences! I have a 10yr old and 7yr old who both read this book and loved it. The illustrations are beautiful and would easily keep a younger child captivated. If by chance you have visited Aruba you will definitely appreciate the attention to details of the island. Definitely a great book that I will be gifting to friends!

American Authors of Children's Book Supports Cats & Dogs Foundations

The Lipoffs from Maryland are a remarkable American family that fell in love with Aruba a long time ago. The Red Anchor in San Nicolas is where the book ‘Super Coco; “Will You Be My Friend” was born. An idea that sprouted out of an encounter between a black rooster and a pigeon. “This is a book about making friendships, diversity, acceptance, animals and the habitat. All with a backdrop of our beloved Aruba,” says Jay M. Lipoff.

Jay and Julie are back in Aruba to promote their book and at the same time support the local community. They paid a visit to the Nine Lives Aruba Foundation, a group of animal lovers who joined forces volunteering themselves to help animals in their free time. The Lipoffs wrote on their Facebook: “Bringing some kitten food and cat and dog toys to support some of the Aruban nonprofits helping animals, as part of our giving back portion from the proceeds of the book. It is heart-breaking but incredibly comforting to know that Geraldine Toro Vera Kock, her husband John and all of the volunteers at Nine Lives Aruba Foundation are doing everything they can to help care for, protect and find homes for cats and dogs.” Seeing them so happy with their new toys was so rewarding, the authors say. “There are amazing animals, filled with love, everywhere. Open up your heart and let them in.”

The story behind the book

Jay: “I have been visiting Aruba since 1998. It’s a wonderful place, and now with my family, we head out every couple of years.” One time they were here they came across a black rooster and a pigeon hanging out together day after day near Seroe Colorado, on the way to Baby Beach. “We chuckled and started to make up a story. We named the rooster Coco because he was near a vendor’s ice chest with Super Coco written on the side of it.” The story went from there and eventually resulted in a colorful book with amazing illustrations showing Aruba’s animals in their natural habitat. The book not only has a deeper message that is important to children, but it also shows the island’s typical flora and fauna. In a playful way children learn that it is okay to have a friend that looks very different from themselves.

Cazenovia native releases children’s book exploring diversity and friendship

Earlier this year, Cazenovia native Dr. Jay Lipoff and his wife Julie released “Super CoCo – Will You Be My Friend” — a children’s book that brings attention to inclusion and acceptance of diversity.

The book, illustrated by Ellisa Holder DiRenzo, is available for sale on Amazon and at Walmart.

Set on the island of Aruba, the story follows a rooster named Coco, who was separated from his family at a young age and forced to live alone. One day, determined to make some friends, Coco sets off on a journey to explore the island and meet its native animals.

“Although this story might be perceived as far-fetched, nature shows us repeatedly that the most unlikely bonds of friendships are formed by animals,” Lipoff said. “ . . . Julie and I wrote ‘Super Coco’ to remind children to learn from adversity, embrace differences and always allow room for new friendships.”

According to Lipoff, the story is inspired by an unlikely friendship witnessed by Lipoff and his wife on a family vacation in Aruba.

“Super Coco literally fell in my lap,” he said. “ . . . While on [vacation], my wife noticed a black rooster and a pigeon hanging out together near the big red anchor in Seroe Colorado. Day after day we watched the pair sharing time together. They seemed to stay close to a resident’s food cart with the words ‘Super Coco’ written on its side. The unlikely [friends] were given names and the story was born.”

A portion of the proceeds from the sales of the book will be donated to help rescue and rehabilitate abused and displaced animals in Aruba, and to find them new homes.

“Like many islands, Aruba has a problem with stray dogs and cats, as well as [a need for] sanctuaries for larger animals that are displaced or injured,” Lipoff said.

Lipoff grew up in Cazenovia and graduated from Chittenango High School. He went on to earn a bachelor of science degree in psychology from Syracuse University and a doctorate of chiropractics from New York Chiropractic College in Seneca Falls.

He practiced as a chiropractor in Manlius for 15 years before moving to Maryland, where he and his family currently reside.

Lipoff’s mother, Amy Sheneman, is a longtime Cazenovia resident.

“I am a very proud mother,” Sheneman said. “I truly believe that, especially at this time in our country, children need to grow up with as little hatred and fear as possible, and [with] lots of kindness and compassion. [‘Super Coco’] is a really good book for kids — and maybe some adults too. We all could use some kindness and civility these days.”

Lipoff is also the author of “Back At Your Best: Balancing the Demands of Life With the Needs of Your Body” and “Are You Ready To Be A Hero?” — a coloring book that teaches children what it takes to be a superhero in their community by doing the right thing, never giving up and making healthy choices. The book also discusses bullying, stranger danger and fire safety.

“We all come from different universes and backgrounds, and have unique powers, but when we work together we make a more exciting team and everyone contributes to our success,” Lipoff said. “Having more friends in school with various interest makes you well-rounded . . . Everyone is important and should feel special, so take a moment and acknowledge one another. It’s really pretty cool.”

The author is also the owner of Back At Your Best Chiropractic & Physical Therapy and the founder, chairman and CEO of Foundation 4 Heroes — a nonprofit organization committed to inspiring children and honoring veterans.

Founded in 2014, the organization works to bring gifts, inspiration ad smiles to hospital patients of all ages; to teach school children about discovering the superhero inside each of them; and to find ways to thank veterans for their service and sacrifice.

According to Lipoff, Foundation 4 Heroes visits thousands of families and veterans each year.

“I know how I would feel if one of my children [was] terribly sick or was injured while serving our country,” Lipoff said. “Being supportive of one another is magical . . . Seeing what families go through and knowing the uncertainty is heart-breaking. Knowing we have been able to put a smile on [the face of a child], their parent or a veteran is about as awesome as life gets. It’s what makes all the hard work easy. Giving gifts to people is the icing on the cake for me and it’s like playing Santa Claus. It’s just the right thing to do and so rewarding to your soul.”

Lipoff has been awarded the Arnold Schwarzenegger Legacy Award in recognition of his promotion of health, wellness and fitness, and for inspiring others. He also received a Hero Award from the local Boy Scouts of America for his community service. Foundation 4 Heroes received the Charlotte Hall Veteran’s Home’s Above & Beyond Award presented in recognition of outstanding service and contributions to Charlotte Hall Veterans Home.

Children’s Book starring Aruba about Friendship and Diversity

Aruba Today recently had the honor to meet the Lipoffs from Maryland, a remarkable American family that fell in love with Aruba a long time ago. We met at the Red Anchor in San Nicolas for a very special reason. Here it is where the book ‘Super Coco; “Will You Be My Friend” was born. An idea that sprouted out of an encounter between a black rooster and a pigeon. “This is a book about making friendships, diversity, acceptance, animals, the habitat and all with a backdrop of our beloved Aruba,” says Jay M. Lipoff.

Julie and Jay with their two sons come to the island frequently, and the book has played an important role in their visits since it was published. “I have been visiting Aruba since 1998. It’s a wonderful place, and now with my family, we head out every couple of years.” The last time they were here they came across a black rooster and a pigeon hanging out together day after day near Seroe Colorado, on the way to Baby Beach. “We chuckled and started to make up a story. We named the rooster Coco because he was near a vendor’s ice chest with Super Coco written on the side of it.” The story went from there and eventually resulted in a colorful book with amazing illustrations showing Aruba’s animals in their natural habitat. The book not only has a deeper message that is important to children, but is also shows the island’s typical flora and fauna. In a playful way children learn that it is okay to have a friend that looks very different from themselves.

The book has brought the Lipoffs friendships for sure. An example is with Mr. Coco, the man that sells the coconut water on the side of the road near the anchor, named Alipio. The family connects easily with the local community, and that is what they love to do. “We try to absorb as much of local life as possible while we are here, and support local restaurants and venues. Every time we come here we buy Alipio’s desserts, we are all hooked on his sweets”, Jay says laughing. The family donates a portion of the proceeds back to animal organizations in Aruba concerned with the health of the animals and finding them homes.

Super Coco not only fascinates children in Aruba, the Lipoffs have brought the book under the attention of schools in the United States too. “I just read it to a 3rd grade class and they loved it. I showed them pictures of all of the animals from my trips and we discussed visiting Aruba,” Jay says. He has written the book together with his wife Julie over the last two years and it is now published on Amazon, and for sale in Bruna Bookstore on the island. The author is sorting out to get more books to the island to make sure that more children get to know Super Coco, and his story about friendship and acceptance. As Lipoff wrote on Facebook: “We would like to bring this message to #childreneverywhere about understanding the difficulties that come with making new #friends, but also about opening their hearts and having a willingness to welcome new ones regardless of their differences; learning how amazing Aruba is with its diversity of culture and people, as well as, learning about the island of #Aruba and the #animals that live there.”
