During the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands, a loving family is torn apart as the male half collaborates with the Nazis and the female half fights for morality and what it means to be human. The story follows the mother, her two teenage stepsons and their teenage half-sister. The main protagonist, Kees, the oldest and most vulnerable child, is shipped to Russia to fight on the Eastern Front, where he navigates a thin line between insanity and survival.
