In this coming-of-age tale, naïve college student Evan boards at Professor Barlowe’s house, and unwittingly plays ‘novice,’ to former monk Barlowe’s ‘abbot’, a role-playing complicated when both men pursue the same woman—Barlowe’s assistant and Evan’s instructor, Persephone. Eventually, their roles blur and dissolve, ending in a bond that transforms both men.
