Ayodele, a slave on a Virginia tobacco plantation, is given her freedom papers. She travels north in search of work to earn money to buy freedom for her man and child. Along the way she meets Quakers, Indians, Union and Confederate soldiers and some unscrupulous bounty hunters who turn her life upside down. Sequel to The Crossroads of Time.
