Exodus 2022

Adult; Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror; (Market)

Joe Stanton is in agony. Out of his mind over the death of his young daughter. Unable to contain his grief, Joe loses control in public, screaming his daughter’s name and causing a huge scene at a hotel on San Juan Island in Washington State. Thing is, Joe Stanton doesn’t have a daughter. Never did. And when the authorities arrive they blame the 28-year-old’s outburst on drugs. What they don’t yet know is that others up and down the Pacific coast—from the Bering Sea to the Puget Sound—are suffering identical, always fatal mental breakdowns. With the help of his girlfriend Joe struggles to unravel the meaning of the hallucination destroying his mind. As the couple begins to perceive its significance—and Joe’s role in a looming global calamity—they must also outwit a billionaire weapons contractor bent on exploiting Joe’s newfound understanding of the cosmos, and outlast the time bomb ticking in Joe’s brain.
Reviews
Despite occasional heavy-handedness, this well-paced eco-thriller shrewdly teases out its tantalizing premise. Bennett launches his story with a persuasive burst of misdirection as Joe Stanton becomes hysterical when his daughter, Lorna Gwin, goes missing. Despite his terror and vivid sense of loss, Joe, an Episcopal priest on a weekend getaway to the Puget Sound with his girlfriend, Ella, soon recalls that he has never had a daughter. His public meltdown draws the attention of Sheldon Beck, the violently unbalanced third-in-command of Erebus, a private military contractor. A gradual unveiling of the source of the hallucinations, shared by three other men who are now dead, keeps the mystery alive, while Beck’s pursuit of Joe and Ella provides ample tension, but the protagonists’ stolid earnestness is far less interesting than the malevolent, tech-savvy Erebus crew. As Beck’s escalating psychotic behavior generates fireworks, it becomes increasingly difficult to invest in the plight of the two leads. Despite this drawback, Bennett prevails when it counts, leading readers towards a riveting and unequivocally satisfying showdown. (BookLife)
Editorial Reviews

"Exodus 2022 opens full throttle and never lets up. A fresh, original sci-fi thriller full of unexpected twists and turns. Kept me guessing to the very last page."
--Bob Mayer, New York Times bestselling author of the science fiction series Area 51.

"Bennett, after a neat Dean Koontz-style curtain-raiser, keeps raising the stakes. Deft storytelling and a riptide of action."
--Kirkus Reviews

"There is not a wasted word in this tense thriller. It's the reincarnation of Michael Crichton with an occasional side of Tom Clancy at his best - with aliens so close to home that you don't recognize them out of sheer familiarity. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Normally I offer copies of books I've reviewed to subscribers as a thank you. But you can't have this one. Buy your own copy. It's mine."
--Editor, Abyss & Apex, Magazine of Speculative Fiction

"I'm not usually a sci-fi thriller enthusiast. But Kenneth G. Bennett has set this on-the-edge-of-your-seat story in the Great Pacific Northwest where I make my home. After reading Exodus 2022, this place will never look quite the same. His best yet."
--Rebecca Wells, author of Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood and other novels.

"Truly, this book hits its stride in its "Love of Earth, sea, and sky"--a strong theme-- and is at its best where it defies convention and dives into eco-lit territory."
--EcoLit Books

"Exodus 2022 is an extraordinary book--a wild, thrilling ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat while tackling themes as big as life itself, the connection between humankind and the natural world, and the fate of the planet as we know it. Highly recommended!"

--Syrie James, bestselling author of The Missing Manuscript of Jane Austen.
