A Note from BookLife
November 11, 2024
As protectors of free speech, we offer some thoughts on the election and our BookLife community.
No two books are exactly alike–and no two people are just alike either. The recent election felt like a triumph for many voters frustrated by a difficult economy and longing for a different approach in Washington. But it was a painful gut punch to voters concerned about continued threats to women's choice, those disturbed by cruel and bombastic rhetoric, and individuals frightened by potential deportations of loved ones.
Regardless of the outcome, our democratic process was upheld. It's this–the promise that our collective voices are heard, the results honored–that allows us to persevere.
BookLife stands with all authors. As purveyors of ideas and words, writers have a unique opportunity to create change. All authors across all books share a passion for the challenging, joyful, and sometimes perplexing creative process.
We won't always have the same perspectives, but we share the conviction that our freedom to express ourselves and engage in peaceful debate is to be celebrated and never taken for granted. The same way that we will always stand up against hate and bigotry, no matter its origins or targets.
It's our hope at BookLife that the fissures between us begin to feel less pronounced and that we all come to root for our shared humanity over individual leaders or political parties.
Whatever uncertainty might lay ahead, there will also be tremendous light, one we carry in our hands and that emits from our keyboards. This comes through a mutual commitment to practicing empathy, escaping our silos, and listening to one another. What better way to bridge our distances than through reading other authors' words or stepping into the mind of a character who at first feels unfamiliar?
We'll trek onward doing what we love, and in solidarity with those who care deeply for our country. Truth, beauty, and the wonder of storytelling will survive and persist–so long as we protect it. With that, get back to writing, sharing your work, and supporting your fellow authors. We're all in this together.
