Are divas born or made? I believe the answer is both. We are all inherently born a diva with a unique brand of beauty, intelligence, and talents that are just ours to own. Like a fingerprint, we are all unique. We also have unique experiences that shape who we become. Sometimes those experiences empower us and sometimes they blind us to our greatness. I have learned that simple shifts in perspective around an experience makes for new and better experiences in the future. That perspective is driven by your inner diva.
I didn’t discover my inner diva until later in life. In fact, I was in my thirties when she presented herself and that was a defining moment. In a single second I felt free. I was sitting in an office with my boss and she asked me when I was going to stop living by the definitions that the bullies in my life had given me, and start embracing my inner goddess. We engaged in quite a conversation that changed my life and thought processes forever. That conversation is responsible for my going back to school, studying psychology, neuro linguistics, and interpersonal communication, getting my masters certification as an empowerment coach for teenage girls, and writing this book.
I wished I had acknowledged and embraced my inner diva in my youth. If I had, my teenage years would have been a lot easier. You see, I’ve been there and done that. I felt awkward as a teenager and was completely uncertain about who I was and where I fit in. I fell under the influence of bullies, had insecurities about body image and whether or not I measured up, experienced friendship drama, and dealt with the overall pressures of the teenage years. I tried my best to hide in the shadows of others, but I couldn’t hide from the insignificance and “not enoughness” I felt inside. These feelings of self-doubt were causing me to make bad choices in a desperate effort to be liked and fit in…somewhere…anywhere.
When I started following this inner goddess that I like to call diva, my life began to change. I no longer felt like life was happening to me. I began to make conscious choices every day that increased my joy and ability to succeed, and yet still live by the values I hold dear in faith, compassion, and kindness. I began living on purpose and I felt an amazing freedom. It no longer mattered what someone else thought of me and I relieved myself of the responsibility I felt to live by their definitions of what was cool or uncool. I was finally able to define for myself what beauty and success meant because they are subjective and mean something different to everyone. I no longer felt like a victim because I chose to be a victor.
The more I listened to my Diva the better my life became. I started trusting her more and more. She empowered me at work. She empowered me to have healthy relationships. She empowered me to make decisions that honored and respected myself and kept me true to my values. She’s never let me down or steered me in the wrong direction.
Several years ago I decided it was time to literally write another chapter in my life. Tons of ideas for books started popping up in my head – that was my inner diva showing up again with the vision for my purpose. I took a deep breath, picked up a pen and paper, and began to write with a mission to introduce teenage girls to their inner diva.
My wish for every mother and teen who read this book is that you discover how truly powerful and beautiful you are. I hope you take the time to read section by section and truly think through the questions at the end of each section. Define for yourself who you are, what beauty and success mean to you, and wear them like a diva badge of honor. You have so many wonderful things ahead in your life. Live it on purpose with your own diva style.
