Beth Harlan Greb is an American mongrel of English, Irish, Scotch, German, French, North American Indian, Canadian, Quaker, Methodist and Roman Catholic ancestry. She was born in Atlanta, Ga., spent summers in New England and Iowa, or touring the U.S. with her mother and brother. When she was thirteen, her family moved to N.Y., lived on 79th St. in Manhattan for two years, and then in Bronxville, N.Y. She graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in 1969, and settled in a small town in western, Pa. For thirty years, Beth has lived in Raleigh, N.C. Her perspective includes those of the South and the North, the big city and the small town.
In Memoirs by Proxy she examines the lives of her parents, who left behind thousands of documents and letters that allowed her to follow the journey of an American family from humble beginnings to prosperity and achievement in the twentieth century. In context with the times, places and events which made them who they were, they and their ancestors are brought to life in their own words beginning in the 1930’s. Thus the title of this book is Memoirs by Proxy.
The book is a tale of generations building new identities as they experience their lives.
