DALE KUETER wrote for Iowa newspapers for 41 years, 35 at The Gazette in Cedar Rapids. He retired in 1999. Kueter attended Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, for two years, and was graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of Iowa in 1958. He enlisted in the Iowa Army National Guard in 1958.
Kueter grew up on a farm near Bellevue, Iowa. After college he married Helen Hayes. They are parents of five daughters and have 14 grandchildren. He has published a children’s book, “Hide the Daddy,” and two full-length non-fiction books, “Vietnam Sons” and “The Smell of the Soil.” Last fall he had published a historical novel, “Motel Sepia,” and has started a new fiction book, tentatively titled "Ma Baker's Boys.".
He is a strong proponent of family story writing as a means of sustaining family history. That is the essence of his book, “The Smell of the Soil.”
Besides spending time with grandchildren, Kueter still likes to putter in the soil – attending to flowers and a small vegetable garden. He likes to fish, travel and is a long-suffering fan of the Chicago White Sox. He and his wife live in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
