The author is a self-described Florida Boy, who grew up in Central Florida and Tallahassee during most of the period covered in the book and has been an archaeologist for over thirty years. He has worked for the National Park Service, the State of South Carolina, and the United States Virgin Islands, where he was the Senior Territorial (State) Archaeologist from 2001 through 2009. Although having written a large number of scientific and technical reports over the years, this his first foray into writing for a general audience. This collection of mostly humorous stories reflects both the promise and dangers of coming-of-age as well as the pitfalls of pursuing a professional career. Here is a bitingly honest portrayal of a renegade of sorts, not always the altar boy originally intended, and full of a menagerie of odd and interesting characters, awkward situations, and unanticipated outcomes. Brewer is now a consulting archaeologist living in Orlando, who maintains close relations with his first wife, sons, and friends in Tallahassee, which he visits often.
