I first became interested in writing when, on a lark, I attended a past life regression workshop. To my great surprise, under hypnosis I recalled living as a slave on a small family farm in Tennessee. That experience launched a 20 year writing project that became my first novel, Unmentionables, about slaves and slave holders who lived and loved during the Civil War. Unmentionables won the 2010 Book of the Year bronze medal for LGBT Fiction.
My second novel, Detonate, inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's film, Saboteur, is a wrong-man thriller with a private investigator who's half-black, half-white, half-gay and half-straight. Tyrone King is a hero distinguished by the fact that he doesn't use guns or violence to pursue the bad guys.
My third novel, The Winkler Case, is a gay reimagining of the classic noir novel, Double Indemnity by James M. Cain. This book is set in Chicago--in the world my parents grew up in. I loved researching this time period and having the opportunity to use 1940's slang.
My fourth novel, All to Pieces, is a sequel to Unmentionables. It was a pleasure for me to return to the story of Jimmy and Cato and to follow their growth through difficult circumstances. Immersing myself in the United States of 1862 put the United States of the present into perspective for me--something I found personally helpful.
