She moved to Sedona in 1991, where she worked as a reporter, editor, and political columnist for the Sedona Red Rock News. Birch’s political column for the Red Rock News, “Gerrymandering,” was awarded a first place national award by the National Newspaper Association.
Extensive research and a trip to Germany to interview a WWII German submarine officer who was also a prisoner of war resulted in “The Swastika Tattoo,” a historical novel set in Arizona and in Germany. The novel was recently awarded an honorable mention in an international book contest sponsored by Reader’s Choice.
