Kevin Milligan is a critically acclaimed painter and author. His book Mendocino: A Painted Pictorial was selected for the Smithsonian Portrait Gallery of Literature by the Chief Curator of American Art. His new book Big Sur to Mendocino includes 120 coastal paintings. The painted pictorial is paired with a text that describes history of early pioneers and the diverse group of artists who have been inspired or used the California Coast as subjects in their works. The text is constructed, from research of diaries, letters, manuscripts and interviews.
Kevin’s paintings have been selected for National Exhibitions by Art Critics from the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and The Bloomberg Report. His works have been exhibited in Museums and Galleries in Italy, New York, Ohio, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kansas, and California. His original and published works are owned by collectors in China, Switzerland, Germany, France, England, Ireland Canada and Australia. In addition, his works have been purchased by collectors in all 50 US States.
He was introduced to painting at age eight by his father Guy, a professional designer. His mother Jacquelyn encouraged him to paint and draw using art supplies his father brought home from his graphic design studio. His visual sense was enhanced during childhood while living in a house made mostly of glass situated on a hillside with panoramas of an oak-hickory forest. These forest scenes became his first subjects for painting and drawing. His brothers Gary and twin Kris helped him build treehouses and raise pet raccoons. The three brothers were always on the go in between scouting trips and practice sessions on the tennis court. He would attend the Kansas City Art Institute and study figurative painting and drawing with master teacher Wilbur Niewald.
Kevin joined his twin brother Kris in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1981. His first California subjects were the Oakland neighborhoods of Crocker Highlands and Lake Merritt. His East Bay motifs expanded to canyon views from the Oakland and Berkeley Hills.
Kevin resides in Carmel California where he directs the Kevin Milligan Gallery on Lincoln Street.
