Her Highness Builds Robots was born when Laura Winters starting working on a princess coloring book during downtime in a musical rehearsal. Irritated by the coloring book's offensive deceptions of princesses, Laura crossed the captions out, added feminist captions, drew the princesses to represent a wide variety of ethnicities, and posted the creations to Instagram. After seeing the images, Laura's twin sister Beth suggested the two could turn the pictures into something real: a coloring book featuring princesses whose dreams of becoming president, writing plays, and designing robots superseded those of finding a prince to marry. Equalitoys was created. The Winters sisters are working on a second coloring book that tackles stereotypes through diverse superheroes.
Laura Winters graduated from Northwestern University graduate. Laura's book "Uncommon Women: The Explorers" (BookBuddy) will be published this fall. When not working on projects for Equalitoys, Laura blogs and studies lyric writing in the BMI Music Theatre program in NYC.
Beth Winters graduated from Elmhurst College. She recently passed her Insurance Producer exams for both Life and Health Insurance and works at an insurance agency in Chicago. When she’s not working her day job or working on Equalitoys, Beth loves to read and aspires to travel one day to Rome.
