Marcus Schantz left Chicago and the practice of law in August 2013. After a brief stint in Mexico writing, he worked as a night calver on a cattle ranch in north central Idaho. He now resides in Texas and works in search engine marketing and continues to write.
In 2015, he published two novels, ".40 Cal Sayulita" and "Concealed Carry." He is also a freelance writer of informational articles, marketing copy, opinion editorials, blog posts and creative short stories on a variety of topics that include health & fitness, business, technology, medical and legal.
Before relocating to Mexico, Marcus was a seasoned Chicago felony criminal defense attorney with jury trial experience in the most serious of cases. In August 2011, he secured not guilty verdicts in the case of The People of the State of Illinois v. Kenneth Green. In this case, Mr. Green was charged with the attempt murder of two Chicago police officers that he shot while they were inside of his home with a valid search warrant. Mr. Schantz convinced a Cook County jury that Mr. Green's use of self-defense was justified. This verdict received immense attention from pro-gun rights activists and critics of the U.S. war on drugs.
In March 2012, Mr. Schantz' client, charged with a murder from 1984 through evidence developed by the Chicago police department's cold case unit, was found not guilty.
Marcus is an avid marathon distance runner with a personal best of 2:49:03 at the 2012 Chicago Marathon. He is also a sub-12 hour Ironman triathlon finisher and overall fitness enthusiast. Marcus is also a songwriter and has played guitar for over 30 years. In 2011 he formed a band called Monday Blue, who recorded a five song EP of original rock music written by Marcus in collaboration with his band mates. This short-lived project performed at many popular Chicago venues, such as The Elbow Room and Goose Island.
