I was born in 1979 in Germany, yes I am that old and still young at heart, I grew up in a small town, well small for Germany with only 5000 people in the community. I was an average student in all subjects that didn’t had to do with reading and writing, so in none. When I was 18 a dear friend brought me together with a specialist for learning disabilities and I learned that my problems with reading and writing came not from being stupid, but from being dyslexic. He gave me pointers on how to learn to work around it and I slowly began to learn how to overcome my dyslexia.
A few years later I married had children and in 2002 we moved to France, or rather the Alsace where most people spoke German as well as French.
Living there as home staying mom, I emerged myself in online communities and soon was ask about immigrating to France. That led to the build of a website and then to me printing out the information and selling it as a book... well kind of a book. In 2005 a publisher contacted me asking if I was interested to publish all the information as a real book. Excited I agreed an in spring 2006 my first book was published with the Lerato Publishing house. (ISBN: 3938882077)
Since it was a young and small publisher, I tried to help with the promotion, searching for any online community and opportunity to promote the book. Only because of my inexperience and over eagerness I wrote everything on the fly, and did not correct any spelling mistakes. Which due to my dyslexia where a lot, many I could have avoided by doing what I do nowadays writing it as Word document first and let technology help. I was ridiculed and often insulted but in my youth and the blindfolds I was wearing, I didn’t see it as something to work on, only as something to get angry about.
In the end, it led to me sitting down and venting my anger by writing down my own story, because as much as I was insulted there were also those who saw the strength behind my doing, telling me that I was strong and fierce. I wrote what could be called an autobiography, but it was centered around how I was treated and how I felt as a child and teenager, not knowing that I had a learning disability in addition to all the health problems I had since birth. (Nail-Patella Syndrome)
I showed the book to my publisher and he jumped on it, within a few months it was published. (ISBN: 3938882328)
Both books rose to the bestsellers list of the publishing house and stayed there for a long time. Giving me the courage to try my hand on writing something I wanted and planned to get published my first Fantasy novel.
In 2007 we immigrated to Canada, and in the same month my publisher offered to publish my fantasy novel as well, but told me that we had to work on it some more. We were in the final stages when changes in the Taxation laws in Germany forced the publisher into bankruptcy.
Knowing that with half the world between me and any German publishing house there was no way of being signed with someone else I stored the story and concentrated on integrating myself into this new life. Until 2011 I didn’t give my writing career much thought, life was good and my English not good enough to write a story. Then I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and knew that at some point I would become unable to continue in my current job as cook. With that in the back of my head, I worked intensively on improving my English and started to write again, only for myself, just so I got back into the work that is part of being a writer.
In 2013, the point came where I had to stop working, and where I started to write in honest again. With the help of modern technology and friends, I managed to produce an almost spelling mistake free manuscript, and decided to publish it as independent author. Now more than a year later Waiting in the Wings is published on April 1st, a novel that has grown close to my heart because there is a lot of myself in the story.
It is mostly fiction but deals many of the problems I had and still have to face on a daily basis. As a writer I aspire to not just entertain, also it’s the main goal, but also to inform and raise awareness to things like Fibromyalgia, Nail-patella Syndrome and other illnesses and disabilities that force a person to either hate life or overcome them.
Life is an adventure, a roller coaster that has it’s highs and lows, it’s how you handle them that makes you special and strong. To me people who life and overcome whatever live throws at them are the heroes of everyday life. It took me years to understand that, not just about me but also about every living person. Yet I also love romance and the idea of finding this one person that is everything to you that is your sunrise and your daws, the one you can’t live without.
I find inspiration in almost everything, a tree standing alone in a field, an old shack crumbling down telling a story of what it has seen, or watching people in the mall. Everything and everyone has a story, and sometimes those stories as imaginative as they are, are worth telling.
