Norm E. Oshiro
Norm Oshiro has a BA in Sociology, an MS in Meteorology, both from the University of Hawaii (UH), and an MBA from the University of Southern California (USC), Marshall School of Business. He is also credentialed as a Project Management Professional (PMP) through the Project Management Institute (PMI).
He spent 11 years in meteorology field research and co-authored four UH research papers on Hawaii state-wide wind energy assessments, then spent 32 years advancing through the ranks with Electronic Data Systems (EDS) and Hewlett Packard (HP), which acquired EDS in 2008, both large multinational information technology corporations.
Norm started with EDS in Hawaii in 1983 as a computer programmer/ systems engineer (SE), then was moved into the role as a team leader, then promoted to SE supervisor, SE manager, then became the account manager for EDS’ Southern California Solution Center. He later went into sales support for two years and in the last third of his career, he worked in the Government Services group and progressively advanced as a Project Manager until his retirement in 2015.
He was born and raised in Hilo, on the Big Island of Hawaii, where he grew up in a multi-cultural neighborhood and community. His next door neighbors were Hawaiian, Portuguese, Filipino, and Japanese, and also had Caucasian, Korean, and Chinese friends through school and sports. Starting with T-ball and Pop Warner, he played team sports to his teen years, then became pretty much of a surf bum from high school into college.
He never did that well in the classroom from elementary through high school, including his first two years in college, until a mentor finally got him inspired to reach for a better future.
