When was the last time we had an Einstein, an Edison, or a Tesla? I would like to introduce you to a new series of picture books I am creating specifically for young children (ages 4 – 8) to introduce them to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). Through these books, my goal is to integrate imagination with science and technology in hopes of educating and inspiring the next generation of scientists and inventors that will transform our lives and the world around us.
As a neuroscientist and patent specialist serving the medical community, I designed my books based on how children learn a language: First they hear it, then they speak it, and then they begin to understand its grammatical components. Applying this same principle, my stories introduce and explain inventions and scientific concepts using a similar sequence of learning: First they see it, then they begin to understand it, and then they begin to use it. This approach also supports how the human brain develops after birth since new synaptic connections are primarily formed during the first ten years of life. By introducing STEM topics early on, my stories will not only help sow the seeds of creativity and interest at an early age, but will encourage children to develop, nurture, and grow curious minds that will naturally want to investigate how things work.
