Dr. Tamer Elsayed is an engineer, scientist, ex-professor, and writer. He received his bachelor’s degree from Cal Poly Pomona and master’s and doctorate degrees from Caltech, all in mechanical engineering. He has published more than 30 scientific papers in the fields of computational solid mechanics and high performance computing, and his work has been referenced by fellow academics more than 200 times in scientific journals and conferences. Dr. Elsayed has held the positions of Junior Professor, Senior Research Scientist, and Postdoctoral Fellow. His previous scientific work involved the formulation of computer models for soft materials to create highly predictive computational tools that can aid in understanding traumatic brain injuries.
His recent memoir, Inadmissible (featured in Science Magazine), tells the story of his emigration from Egypt to the U.S. in pursuit of the American dream, and how his one mistake—claiming to be a citizen in order to qualify for federal student loans—landed him behind bars along with some of America’s most notorious offenders. It’s an account of innocence and youth; of persistence and heartbreak; of unsuspecting underdogs and egotistical overlords. But ultimately it’s the true tale of one man’s journey, lived through believing in himself and believing in the good hearts of the people who stuck by him.
