Tommie Lee Thomas is a native son of Quitman, Georgia born June 14, 1947 on the Sheffield sharecropper’s plantation. He was raised in the urban portion of Quitman after the age of six years whereas before he was educated in a Church in rural area named Deansville by his mother Cherry Lee Thomas and a school mom. His urban schooling was at Washington Street High School and fared well under the tutelage of Robert C. Marshall (A relative) and Florence Butts.
Upon graduation, he moved to Detroit, Michigan where he worked on the assembly line at Ford Motor Company. Twenty years of back breaking work was a blessing for it affords him the things to make a comfortable living. The hard work ethics did not go unnoticed by his supervisor who urges him to get a college education. He thought he was making fun of him but the supervisor was for real. So at the age of 43, he took up the offer by Ed Mannion. Ed explained to him that he saw something great and would like for him to succeed. We argued every day all shift long but it was the making of a lifelong friendship. Ed is White (Caucasoid), and he means the world to me and is my best friend. A new position opened up called Statistical Process Control (SPC) and he wanted me to fill that position after he started school going to Central Michigan University at night working 7 days a week twelve hours a day from five to five.
