Twelve years following a cataclysmic event that took civilization to the brink of no return, the Triplow family has finally found peace. Settling in Corona, California, has ensured that the past horrors and madness remain relegated to another time, another place. On the morning of September 7th, 2022, that false perception is shattered when Bob Triplow is forced to take his son back to his past, and the horrors of childhood - a place truly out of this world - where he will struggle for sanity, while his son, a mere child of ten, will be compelled to make decisions upon which six billion lives depend.

If you enjoy a slow-burn with twists and turns, then search no further, because Kaleidoscopic Shades: Within Black Eternity (Gatekeeper Press) by David A. Neuman is all that and more. The tale is rich with intrigue, and the plot will captivate paranormal readers from beginning to end. Readers are also presented with a variety of interesting characters that play off each other’s weaknesses and strengths, all of whom have been expertly crafted by the author.

A FRIGHTFUL ENEMY SEEKING REVENGE

We follow Bob Triplow, an inventor, who had relocated with his wife, Sue, from Adelaide, Australia, to Corona, California. Bob’s past, however, haunts him and is threatening to come not only for his own sanity but is also determined to claim his son, Joshua.

Then, we learn about a town in South America disappearing and its entire population vanishing with further weird phenomena being documented. What’s more, the strange happenings begin to accumulate and intensify as time becomes nonsensical, and children, including Joshua, describe terrible nightmares that are eerily similar to one another. Children begin disappearing soon thereafter, including Joshua’s friend, Sammy.

It is here that the reader will be able to realize what a horrible journey awaits Bob Triplow and how the past plays into the present. More importantly, the villain is introduced — one Patrick Nesmith, a.k.a. the “man in black” — and Bob comes to the conclusion that he has to face his past to save the future and, essentially, the world.

IF TWIN PEAKS AND THE TWILIGHT ZONE HAD A BABY …

While I do feel Kaleidoscopic Shades: Within Black Eternity has a creepy vibe to it, placing it firmly in the paranormal genre, I cannot overlook the science fiction elements that complement the plot. There is even something almost thriller-ish about it, too, which will definitely be appealing to someone who enjoys a good genre-bender. Not to mention, there is a surrealism quality to be found in this book, one that is akin to Twin Peaks or The Twilight Zone, which will certainly provide paranormal lovers with ample entertainment.

While Kaleidoscopic Shades is a tome, the journey is certainly worth the number of pages this book contains. I do have a sneaky suspicion that maybe the author has a prequel planned, which will clarify some things I came across in the beginning of the book that I initially thought of as somewhat random but now feel have a purpose.

On the other hand, as a writer, I commend the author for the hard work that was put into Kaleidoscopic Shades. The writing and editing are, without a doubt, well done. An ambitious first novel? Yes. But definitely worthy of praise. I am eagerly waiting to see what the author has in store for readers next!
