As I read "1981.", a few things became very clear to me:
(1) The courage it took for UniQue Webster to write such a piece was immense. This book was thoroughly candid. And as an artist of several mediums myself, I'm not sure I could've been this forthcoming in my works. Her ability to be relatable and poignant by simply disclosing pieces of her life is astounding.
(2) With the aforementioned openness of "1981." in mind, I can say confidently that I have never read a piece of literature this autobiographical written in poetry or journal form. The entries tell a very layered and vivid story a woman's journey through trauma, family crisis, and trials endured to find one's self. The pieces builds upon each other to paint an overall picture. It's quite creative.
(3) This isn't just the tale of UniQue's growth. It's the honest tale of most people; if they choose to face themselves. At many points and in many entries, Unique shows you what she sees in the mirror. Even if it's less than desirable. And she acknowledges changes she wants to see in herself. We should all strive to be so bold.
