We are all fated to die and the earth will continue to circle the sun. Of this we can be sure. When four people sharing an apartment happen upon a device that transports them three weeks into the future, they care less about the grand scheme and more for the proximity of their approaching futures. During their brief futuristic episodes they are cast as key players in a crime. Alan, a down-on-his-luck middle aged man fires two bullets into the chest of an attorney he doesn’t know, growing to like the power of the gun while his younger cousin, Sanger, lost in adulthood, wants to be under the wing of their petty-criminal uncle, Bill. Sanger's girlfriend, Em, sees herself physically attracted to the man she is to blackmail, annoying her boyfriend. And Rooster, a fifteen-year-old runaway, faces a future she hopes will not arrive. Both wanting and not wanting the future to unfold, the four contact the maker of the device who is convinced only a true understanding of time will help them. From Plato to quantum physics, religion to common sense, immediacy and anticipation to the gravity of elephants, the maker expresses time from a variety of perspectives. Returning to the dilemma of free will at odds with determinism, the characters take seriously the question 'Does the future already exist?' Finally understanding that in the fields of physics, philosophy and theology, there is no consensus on the nature of time, or on the existence of the future, their day of destiny arrives, affirming and refuting the power of choice to smooth the road beyond now.

The Beyond Now Device caught, and held my attention right from the start. The book is part mystery, part time-travel adventure, and part an exploration of the concept of time. You will like this book if you like mysteries, and are curious about how we view time then looking at the past, the present (now), and the future. The story plays out over the course of several weeks, and details the experiences a group of people sharing an apartment have with a mysterious strange device they come upon. The device projects them a few days into the future. Strangely, the characters have different personal experiences when they each use the device, but their experiences all revolve around the same future event. It is well written with a small cast of characters you come to know well over the span of the story.
