Selwyn leaves his home, on a farm in the Yorkshire Dales, to study at Liverpool University of Technology. It is The Beatles era, with Women's Liberation. He is a top student and attracts girls but his skills in love relationships are inept and comic. His beautiful girl friend Vicki uncovers his duplicity with Barbara on a lie detector. She gives him the cold shoulder. He adopts a straddle strategy with the two girls, as used in commodity speculation, to concentrate on his studies and get a first class degree. It works well, until Barbara gets pregnant. In a job in Canada, he tries to close with Vicki when she visits, but he lures his bullying brother into a skiing accident, repelling Vicki. He becomes a hippy and tries commune-living and polygamy in South America. Back in the UK, he recruits forty women to crew a polygamous commune on a sailing ship. Vicki won't join and he is driven from girl to girl, unsatisfied. He studies to end the Cold War and marries Ruth. After a dramatic nervous breakdown, he returns to his job with an oil company in Canada. He rises to CEO. He is blamed for famine and a technology disaster in an African country, Bigeria. He longs to go to Vicki in the UK, but stays with Ruth until their children finish PhDs. When Selwyn rushes to Vicki, single all this time, he finds she has just married. Too late, Selwyn learns his disastrous relationships with women result from Asperger's Syndrome and Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder. Vicki has been an obsession, with a series of addictions to his father, his sister, sex, alcohol, work and food. Tragedy is averted because Selwyn has covered the possibility of Vicki being unavailable in another love straddle. He is happy with hippy Helen.
