Essential reading for anyone in the retail financial services industry in the 1960s and on

By John P on 20 July 2014

Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase

A well written and insightful review of a 47 year working life. He deals with the downs as well as the ups of a varied and challenging career which had high points and some very low points. This is all fascinating reading for anyone who was involved in the development of unit linked life insurance in the 1960's or of international investment products in the 1980's. It also shows in a most interesting way how the world of work generally has changed in the last 40 - 50 years, and not always for the better. I strongly recommend this book by someone who was at the core of many financial services industry developments. My only stylistic criticism is that there are too many exclamation marks!

Temps Passe

By Peter Watts on 6 Oct 2014Format: Paperback

I travelled with George to the Middle East, on numerous occasions, during the time that he was at Hill Samuel. I also learned from reading his book, that, before our Hill Samuel days together, our careers had often intersected at various geographical points. The book, which is written in the form of a travelogue through George's working life, also offers insights into how all aspects of business practice have changed over the period covered by his career. The corporate style of the different companies for whom he worked and the descriptions of the various countries in which he operated maintain the reader's interest and attention.

The City, a lost age.

By David Summers on 7 Oct 2014Format: Paperback

A memoir of a time in the City of London when everything seemed possible and people from all backgrounds felt that they could make a difference. The author captures the spirit of the times, depicting the many and varied characters with all their talents and flaws who drove innovation within the City. How times have changed.
