Does an ex-cop ever lose his "nose" for investigating? Freshmen Senator, Bryan Gallagher, certainly hasn't, when the love of his life, Jessica, is kidnapped by a mad man. No stone is left unturned, as he plays the role of senator by day and rogue detective by night, calling in favors and working his past snitches to the bone to find her. The only problem is, who does he focus his efforts on ... her deranged, former father-in-law who lusts after her, a crazed felon hell-bent on revenging the execution of his brother put to death under the Senator's newly passed Death Penalty Bill, or an unknown psycho, looking for his "moment of fame"?
A Pawn for Malice is a thrilling, passionate, and suspenseful romance that entails self-discovery, survival and a love, that is so strong, it conquers the evil trappings of a criminal mind.
I wasn’t sure what to expect, at first, with A PAWN FOR MALICE. While the synopsis sounded intriguing, mysteries are not usually what I gravitate towards in a book.
I was pleasantly surprised.
The story begins by introducing the reader to Jessica Wilton. She has been living in an abusive marriage, and after receiving a threat from her Father-in-Law, flees to her aunt’s house for safety and a new beginning. Landing a job in her profession of choice, and being surrounded by supportive friends and family have Jessica believing that life has finally settled. That the danger is a bad memory, left in the past.
But she was wrong.
Bryan Gallagher is a senator in New York, a former police detective and increasingly drawn to Jessica. When life takes an unexpected and dangerous turn for her, he is determined to stop at nothing to bring her back to the safety that she sought.
I have to say, I love books with a strong, female character and Jessica does not disappoint. She has already proven to be a survivor, has a lot of spunk, and is determined to get what she wants out of life. And while Bryan’s character is equally as interesting and developed, I felt that Cynthia Roberts did an excellent job of keeping the romance towards the background, while maintaining a compelling, suspenseful storyline.
I really, really enjoyed this book! I would start to think that maybe I had the mystery solved, only to be surprised by a plot twist. (Many plot twists, truth be told.) I found myself caught up in the emotions of the moment, needing to know what happened next, leaving me completely unable to put the book down. I was thoroughly hooked. If you find a book that enables you to forget about the world around you, hang on to that author for dear life.
Bottom Line: An excellent read that keeps you guessing

This is an exciting workplace romance that takes place in the Capital building of New York State in Albany, New York. I love mysteries and this book is full of them. Jessica starts a new job for Senator, Bryon Gallagher. Jessica has just gotten out of a very abusive relationship and the death of her husband won’t stop the abuse that her father-in-law is now set to torment her with. Now she is safe under her aunt’s care and she has a new job with a very sexy Senator. When Jessica is kidnapped, the senator teams back up with his former partner when he was a detective to bring back the woman that makes his world make sense. I enjoyed the chemistry between the two main characters. The pacing was fast and exciting. I loved the ending with all the twists. The story could have had more character development, but as a shorter story, it works well. I really did enjoy reading this story. Reading a book that includes places that I have been always makes them more enjoyable to me.
