Abnormal Results: Cancer changes everything
Kimberly Rae, author

Children/Young Adult; General Fiction (including literary and historical); (Market)

It’s been me, Chad, Alecia and Dan since kindergarten, back when it didn’t matter about boys or girls or who had name brand shoes or who could play sports or not. Things have changed over the years. We’ve changed. But I was sure nothing was big enough to wedge into our friendship. We’d stay the same forever. I was wrong.

***

Victoria Dane, a borderline autistic teen, needs order. Her three best friends since kindergarten are her sense of security, represented by the three rubber ducks she keeps in a perfect row on her bathroom windowsill. As they age, however, and are drawn toward different interests, Victoria can't keep her friends in their perfect places like she can her ducks. A threat of school violence, and a friend's diagnosis of leukemia force Victoria to make the hardest decision of her life. Will she change as life changes, or will she hide?

PRAISE FOR ABNORMAL RESULTS

I expected a roller coaster ride with Abnormal Results, and Kimberly Rae did not disappoint. There were so many times I wanted to stand up and applaud these kids as they had to find a way to deal with cancer while learning that the world doesn't stop because of some abnormal cells. They still had to navigate high school, growing up, changing friendships, and the fact that humankind can be devastatingly dark. There were several characters I came to love, as well as twists and turns that I did not expect. Like in life, this book throws curve balls and changes plans just when you think you have it all figured out. Victoria and her friends have to figure out whether they are strong enough to face what comes their way, or whether they're going to run and hide. This was a satisfying book in every way, and I am thrilled to have discovered it.

I was truly enamored by Abnormal Results, so much so that I read the entire thing in a three-hour sitting. I found it to be witty, interesting, and real, as well as simply a good read! I loved it, and would read it again in a heartbeat.

In Abnormal Results by Kimberly Rae, we meet Victoria, who is decidedly abnormal. She has a desperate need to keep things in order, to put things in their place. She might have been the odd duck out in school if it were not for her friends Chad, Alecia, and Dan, who guided her from kindergarten all the way into high school. Now, just when she is starting to find her place in the world, her world turns upside down. Cancer has no place in an ordered world, and certainly not in a world that is dominated by a rigid need for control and to put things where they belong.

Susan King, author of Optimism for Autism

As the parent of autistic child, I am so impressed by how accurately Kimberly Rae portrays the world of autism. I fell in love with the main character Victoria and found myself cheering her on as she coped with the many challenges she encountered through her autistic-like qualities.Everything was so familiar to what our family has encountered. This book opens the door to the world of autism and gives a hopeful glimpse into those hearts of those who struggle with it. Parents of autistic children and others impacted by autism would benefit greatly from reading Abnormal Results. I am certain anyone who reads it would discover as I did that "abnormal" means the Lord is doing something way beyond what we could ever imagine!
