An Oscar For Roscoe
When Herbert Preis was in his early twenties, he accompanied his father to their bank to borrow money for his café that specialized in hamburgers. He witnessed the bank manager rejecting the loan application, then watched his father relentlessly chew out that manager before they left the bank. Years later, their Preis-Burger business becomes extremely successful, with numerous electronically automated outlets throughout the city. Herbert's father dies in a mental institution and Herbert sells the business to a conglomerate for millions. The memory of his father's distasteful encounter with the banker still lingers in his mind, so Herbert buys the controlling interest in a major local bank to satisfy his desire to prove how a bank should be run, based on his success with hamburgers. Part One of this book is entitled “Hamburgers” and it tells us what happens to Herbert Pries and some of the people who work in his bank. Part Two is a first-person narrative about a fictitious, career banker who gets fired, then decides to write a story that takes place in a bank environment. That story wins the Pulitzer Prize, and when a famous movie director comes to the author's home and offers to produce and direct a film based on the novel, the author, who had amateur acting experience as a young student and is currently featured in the main role of a local amateur production, stipulates his approval would be based on him portraying the major role of the story's villain, who is from Canada. The author is a native of Rising Fawn, Georgia and clearly displays evidence in his speaking voice. The famous director is literally staggered by what he considers the author's absurd proposal. The author then suggests that he perform, there in his living room, a monologue from one of the director's movies, which just happens to be the director's favorite scene, involving an old fisherman with a thick Italian accent. Barely able to keep from laughing in the author's face, the director devilishly agrees. Since the title of Part Two is “Little Gold Man” and the name of this novel is “An Oscar For Roscoe,” the end result of this scene may be easy to guess... as well as the story's outcome, but it's fun to read... and inspiring.
