Being a Vet in the 21st Century is launching into a troubled sea.
One populated with young vets in their twenties, who are overwhelmingly female.

·        Research from the Veterinary Personality Project (and a bit of common sense) has confirmed that young vets are a different Type of person to older vets. Their motivation is towards the animals they treat, and to the medicine they perform.
And so inevitably as they care for their patients, they neglect their own welfare.

·        Vet Practices on and off the High Street are falling like dominoes into the hands of huge conglomerate holding companies:- 43% and counting...
Veterinary practise is now a finely tuned and honed business. One where 'conditions of work', employee support & welfare all come second to 'the bottom line'.

·        Veterinary Associations and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) are beginning to realise that many young vets are failing to thrive. In fact, upward of 25% of young vets are leaving the profession altogether within 3 years of finishing university.

·        Research from this book has discovered that young vets are increasingly vulnerable to stress-related mental health issues - due in part to their specific Personality Traits:
Vets have the dubious pleasure of being near the top of the National List for depression and suicide.

The waves are getting higher. Every week for the last 6-9 months, articles have been appearing in the veterinary press that detail serious impending man-power shortages, mental health issues, poor career progression, fear and loathing, etc.

The wind is blowing - and the Vet Profession is gradually approaching its very own Perfect Storm.
