Davanté's heart sinks to the lowest of depths. He cannot lose his mother now. He is only seventeen years old. He has not learned enough about life to be on his own. He does not know how to live. He is still hiding his artistic talents out of fear of revealing his inadequacies to the world. Just as he begins to bravely let his mother go , Davanté's father, an ex-convict, pursues his son with dogged determination. Davanté is having none of it. Eventually, Davanté runs away from the world. Alone and confused, Davanté receives support from an unlikely friend. Slowly, he picks himself up and turns his attention to his artistic talents. Finally, Davanté can see the light at the end of the tunnel. His heart begins to climb back from its depressive depths. Davanté begins to learn about himself. He learns to forgive. He learns to live. He learns to love.
