Do you know what a container is? How about a twist lock? Young readers can follow along with Casey as she learns too what she is and why she is so important.

Casey the container is on her first big voyage. She has many items that she will carry to another port. Along the way she learns all about containers and what they carry. She also learns about how the containers lock with each other to stay on the ship. Once at port she learns how the containers are removed and carried on trucks to a distribution center. But, the most important thing she learned was teamwork.

Author Kristina Bowden has created a wonderful story with rhyme that shares how items are brought in from other countries and distributed. Young readers will enjoy the colorful illustrations that depict this process. Easy to read sentences and recognizable objects make for an engaging read for any beginner. Parents and teachers can use this as a tool to teach how we get items like toys, fireworks, and various foods from around the world.

By Marine Link: Book Review - Casey the Container

Editor's Note:

For the past decade, a concerted effort among North American educators and maritime stakeholders to shine a light on career opportunities both on the waterfront and at sea has been underway. Pushing 'maritime' curriculum all the way down to the middle school level and also creating many maritime-themed high schools nationwide, the effort has started to pay dividends. Bowden's book takes the concept just a step further, in a fun and age-appropriate children's book that is sure to stir the imaginations of those who read it.
