Country Boy, City Girl: Trials and Triumphs During The Great Depression
Country Boy, City Girl is told in alternating chapters, featuring the author’s 1936 Olympic-swimming mother and her farm-boy father, who rode the rails across America in the 1930s to earn money for college. House fires, family deaths, parental illness, and other trials challenge them, but in the end they both triumph, one with the help of a successful businessman and the other from an astounding encounter with the most famous athlete of the 20th century. There are 125 historical photographs.

This book tells two completely different stories about two different people who are living in the same town at the same time during the Great Depression. It is brimming with optimism that many of us who weren't around at the time (and have only heard about the Depression) would be hard-pressed to imagine possible. The stories cover profound loss, financial and personal hardship, and perseverance through one of the most devastating times of our country. The experiences that Mable and Harley have and how they work through them create very distinct and 3-dimensional portraits of the lives these young people lived. I like how the book is written, with every other chapter being about either Harley or Mable. Mable's story is written in italics, and Harley's is in a standard font. Each chapter is relatively short and that makes this a great book to read if you only have 10-20 minutes to read at a time. The pictures included in the book are really interesting and help to bring the stories to life even more. Harley's and Mable's stories are inspiring and you'll finish the book wanting to know more about their lives after the book ends. Overall, this is a fantastic book! I will definitely read it again. I may even pull out a few chapters to read with my students. I think there are some great messages within these stories that would be valuable for young people today to hear.
