Russ Linton has done it again. He has taken a superhero fantasy story, blended in a hefty portion of science fiction, dropped it into a world (future?) that the reader knows well, and baked it to perfection. His previous works of Crimson Son and Empty Quiver introduced us to the Augments, humans transformed by their governments into super beings. Crimson Son 2 puts the reader back into that world of super beings but with a deeper and more frightening plot. Like the other two works, this is not a child’s comic book story, but a dense, tightly crafted novel that looks deeply and sometimes painfully at dysfunctional family life, terrorism, cybersecurity, the Internet-of-Things, cryptocurrency, and friendship. The plot of the book is brilliant and scary in that it could really happen. Sometimes with a book this well written, I get so caught up in the action that my desire to know what happens next causes me to read over details that later are important. This is a book I will reread at some point for the nuances and extra details I missed. While I will know the ending, I will enjoy the anticipation more. I highly recommend this book as well as the previous two in this world.
