Cross Over The Tracks
Josh Booth, author

Adult; General Fiction (including literary and historical); (Market)

Cross Over the Tracks examines the lives of two brothers who seemingly “made it” out of their Appalachian small town to pursue law degrees, hoping to move beyond the perceived dead-end roads of their hometown, Huntington, West Virginia.  Unlike his brother, Luke decides to forego the practice of law and pursue his dream of becoming a writer. Although much of his work is in comedy magazines and satires, he finally stumbles upon an issue worth taking seriously. The twins’ small town in West Virginia is being overrun by heroin. Luke believes that this is the story he was meant to write.  On the other hand, Jacob sees his law degree as a one way ticket to respect and affluence but becomes bitterly dismayed to discover the stark realities of his chosen profession.  As one brother chases success and the other chases a story, both will come face to face with the consequences of their choices and discover deep truths about themselves and their futures.

If you are a WV native this is a must read!
Having grown up in West Virginia during this era, I found that Josh's writing painted a perfect picture of the times. He has a knack for developing characters that created an image that I knew most of these guys.
I can't wait to read some of Josh's follow up work. Possibly even a Eddie Tyrell spin off?

This book is food for the soul. It is obvious the author has known, lived, and breathed the scenes portrayed in this novel. He writes insightfully about Appalachian small town nuances like local biscuit and hot dog joints, ubiquitous snuff cans, the heroin epidemic, and buddies who breed field trial beagles as a hobby- to the dark under-belly of the law profession- to losing friends to drug over-dose, tragedy, and suicide- to the wanton freedom associated with beach towns. This story draws all these characters and places into a seamless tale of what we’re all really searching for in this life, connection and purpose.

Many young professionals find themselves pursuing dreams that often place the most important things in life--time for family and friends and faith-- on the "back burner". Depression, discouragement and burnout are becoming more common. Unfortunately "self medication" has been on the rise whether prescription drugs or so called "recreational" drugs. Cross Over the Tracks peels back the "success" veneer and reveal the stark truths that many young couples are facing. Josh Booth skillfully took me back "memory lane" with recounting popular songs, sports teams, names of celebrities and sharing "how it used to be". The book will challenge readers to get their priorities straight in life. Excellent read!
