Lorenzo Martinez
Author
Cuba, Adios
Between 1960 and 1962 more than 14,000 Cuban children fled their country and came to America as part of an exodus that became known as Operacion Pedro Pan. Martinez was one of those children. In Cuba, Adios, Martinez recounts his participation in a program that has often been compared to Kindertransport, a program that saved 10,000 German children from the holocaust. Plagued by guilt of his sexual identity, and having to care for a younger brother, Martinez forges ahead to become the composer of his future. Cuba, Adios, a poignant account of one boy's survival and self acceptance, received first prize in the biography category by the International Latino Books Awards. Cuba, Adios is written with unflinching honesty and a wry humor.
