Reviews
Wally, a mild-mannered, mousy employee, finds life in his office-supply company boring—though it’s spiced up by his outrageous and impulsive buddy, Ost, who throws the office into chaos daily. When the two unwittingly stumble onto the new boss Blaine’s plan to take over the company by marrying the owner’s daughter (Wally’s unrequited love) Sarah, Blaine sends them on what is supposed to be a routine supplies delivery but which he intends to end in their deaths. Yet life in a cubicle has somehow prepared them to take on barbarians, space pirates, giant squids, and corporate thugs. Mixing the sensibilities of office comedy, Seth Rogen bromances, absurd Family Guy asides, and a splash of Walter Mitty, Ostile has successfully adapted his Cubicles comic strip into a goofy yet loveable story, with visually appealing pastel-laden panels, action sequences, and eclectic aliens. Cubicles is a really fun read. It is pretty far out there, but I love it. I myself work in an office and can relate to the mundane part of the job, but Wally and Ost take it to a whole different level. From battling space pirates (with pencils) and zombies (with staplers) to fighting off giant squid, these guys get into a lot of trouble.

This color deluxe edition has some bonus material in the back. Seeing the original comic strips that the characters started from is really cool. The art, the colors, and the giant noses are definitely great to look at. It's a very different story from Ostlie's Shiver Bureau, Vol 1: Welcome to London, but it does have his signature style and snarky banter in it as well.

As a previous reviewer mentioned, the artwork here is spot on. Ostlie is a tremendously talented storyteller and gifted artist. His characters come to life in a relatable way for any office worker that has ever dared to daydream just a little while sitting at their desk. I was lucky enough to meet the artist and get a signed copy. Be sure to check out his other book: Shiver Bureau. There is a different storyline there but the artwork is fantastic and you won't be disappointed.
