They say you feel cold when you die. The people I’ve killed would beg to differ. For twenty-something Ransley, the adopted daughter of famed street fighter Estevan Benitez, fighting is all she knows. One hidden detail separates her from the endless string of her pathetic opponents: she can craft and influence heat and fire. When she’s pitted against the strongest fighters at the infamous Argolla, Ransley faces something she never expected: A man like her. Roydon can duplicate himself. When the two collide in the ring, a chain of deals turns Roydon over to Public Four and he’s taken away to undergo the disturbing process of the Nexis. What it is, or what it does, no one outside of The Public knows. Driven by guilt and a desire to release the only person she’s ever met who’s like her, Ransley isn’t about to leave him for dead—not when he might hold the answers to her missing past. Now she must trust a pair of strangers: a former military man out to collapse the system, and a woman whose premonitions could tear them all apart.

Amazon Review

All the stars. Oh my heavens, yes. This book was absolutely fantastic. Every time I had to stop reading to do something else, all I could think of was what was happening next. J. Kowallis has created characters to love. It was like visiting old friends when I came across Reggie and Nate. Roy and Ransley are great additions to this world, and they are so adorable. And yes, Lobb is still one of those people you love to hate. Fabulous villainy.

I missed Liam and Olivia all over again every time I read their names. My heart hurts for all those that have been lost to the cause. Kowallis really has drawn me into her dystopian world, and I never want to leave. This is a series I highly recommend and will read over and over again.

There are some typos that were missed [author note: ARC copy], but the story is so enthralling that I forget the typos are even there. The characters introduced in this book complement the existing ones so well, and questions that arose in the first book are getting answered, and I cannot wait for the rest of the answers and for book three. Way to go, J. Kowallis!

Devastating and fearless, J. Kowallis has created a dystopian world unlike any other.

Sarah in Zombieland

I have to start this review by saying sorry if it’s abit messy, i have been awake most of the night reading this book because it was SO GOOD i just couldn’t put it down. i’m writing this review with a sleepy head but a happy heart. I don’t say this alot when i talk about book, but this sequel was even better than the first one. The storyline was incredible, it got my attention with a fantastic prologue and from there, I was completely hooked. There is so much i enjoyed in this book : The whole fighting aspect, mostly at the begining, was entertaining and so fun to follow. The special powers our characters have, it was great seeing new ones and learning about about all of them. AND THAT ENDING, what a cliffhanger! Book 2 is not even out and i’m already dreaming of getting my hands on the next one! The ending made my heart break, i just want everybody to be okay and happy! I think one of the main reason why i love this book so much was the characters. seeing Nate and Reggie was wonderful, it was like catching up with old friends. I love them both soooooo much, how can you not? Nate is freaking perfect! we get some very interesting new characters too. I like both Ransley and Roy very much! the relationship between all of them was so fun to follow. Ransley and Nate interactions may have been my favorite. <3 Also, you know you love a character when simply reading his name makes you feel very sad….yes, i’m talking about you, Liam. Kowallis writing is perfect too. Each of her characters had its own voice. It’s an important aspect since the story is told from multiple POVs.

So, i guess that’s all i have to say. Please read this series, it’s amazing, emotional and entertaining.

The Bookish Crypt

This is the sequel to Afterimage and I can’t tell you how in love I am with this series and Kowalis’s writing. I figured out that I hadn’t learned my lesson from book one; I wasn’t prepared for the dose of brutality this book brought into my life. The brutality was doubled but I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t love every moment of it. There was so much suffering and this is a world I would never in a million years would like to be a part of.
This story follows a different set of characters that are impossible to not fall in love with. Don’t worry guys, we also get to see characters from Afterimage!! The supporting characters in this book were as amazing as the main characters and that’s a hard thing to master. I bow down to Kowallis for making it seem to effortless.
Our main character, Ransley, has the power to control fire, as you can see on from the beautiful cover. She was taken in and raised as a child by a former fighter, Estefan, and follows in his footsteps. There is where she meets Roydon…
I have to point out that Roydon is my new obsession. He’s a fighter in every definition of the word and his heart made mine melt. The things he had to go through were so unfair, it made me angry. It’s making me angry just thinking about them now. His actions and words were always perfect. I admit to being jealous of Ransley a couple times.
There are also some disgusting and horrible people in this world that I will not mention because they don’t deserve it.
I LOVED how there were Mexican characters in this story. I can’t get over it. Kowallis made my heart sore to new heights with that detail. I always yearn to see my ethnicity in a story since not many authors I’ve read do so. It’s books like these that make me so unbelievably proud of being bilingual. I don’t know if the finished copy does, but I wish it had translations. I didn’t need them but not everybody is bilingual so that would be a great help.
The thing about this amazingly horrible world is that the more you find out, the more you want to know. Especially after that ending!!! UGH. Jesus, woman. Can you destroy us more!? Just kidding. Forget I asked that. I know you can. I can’t tell you how many times I cried over these amazing characters. I absolutely despise everything they have to go through in order to reach freedom and ultimately, happiness. That ending is killing me and I NEED the next book in the series. I am driving myself crazy in all this denial!!

5/5 stars!

The Pagemistress

** spoiler alert ** 5/5 Stars!!!!

I was provided a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Summary:
This book takes place right after Afterimage but introduces new characters into this post apocalyptic world. Ransley and Estevan are in South America, fighting to make a living. Literally. Ransley has a gift that she doesn't know how she got it. The Public had to have a hand in it, they always do. Ransley meets a guy, Roydon who is similar to her. He has a gift. But then things go seriously wrong, Roy is kidnapped and it's up to Ransley to help. Will she make it in time?

Dislikes:
Nothing really. I mean there is a cliffhanger so now I'm just dying for the next book haha.

Likes:
Roy, oh Roy. I wouldn't mind having one or two of him at home. And I loved the family dynamics in this book. It really felt like I was watching friends and neighbors. The plot was so intricate and detailed. And the writing is so skillfully executed.

Overall:
Please read this series if you like sci-fi, dystopian books. I loved every minute of this and now my empty heart must wait for the next installment.
