Falling Stars Over Belgrade
In a splintering Yugoslavia in 1989, an American film director working on a low-budget Italian/Serbian co-production pursues a last-ditch attempt to stave off financial and marital collapse, and find redemption by finally doing something great. In Falling Stars Over Belgrade, historical events and persons are interwoven with invention. Set in a country on the verge of collapse with the rise of Slobodan Milošević and the fall of the Communist Party, the story traces the rise and fall of Stephen Krawczyk. A struggling Hollywood director, Stephen takes a job directing a low-budget horror film, a chance at fame and fortune, but more importantly, redemption—his finances and marriage are on the verge of ruin. However, while working behind the Iron Curtain, he discovers he must navigate the formidable obstacles presented by a low-budget movie production in a foreign country—colliding cultures, duplicitous producers, defiant actors, a malevolent police captain, civil war—and ultimately, worst of all, the consequences of betrayal. When a mysterious kidnapping threat aimed at his stepdaughter—the prime suspect is the line producer, who is the executive producer’s henchman—arises mid-production, Stephen must take action. This means upending all that he’s worked for. When revolution finally erupts in the streets, when the airports are closed by the military, Stephen must face his greatest challenge of all—how to escape Yugoslavia and save his family.
