It was supposed to be a time for Tara to take a break and get her head together. An easy job teaching for a year at the university in her hometown of Ludington surrounded by her friends and family. Then people started dying. The murdered man was one less thing for Tara to worry about, but the unexpected and so-called accidental death of a student was not.  

As a hurricane is forecast to strike, Tara begins to feel like nothing is as it should be, even in a city where keeping secrets is a way of life. Her mother and aunt, the chief of police, don’t seem interested in involving the Ladies’ Auxiliary in the student’s death as long-standing tradition dictates. The new professor, an author of books on ancient rulers, seems particularly interested in Ludington’s peculiar matriarchal history. And if Tara’s paranoia wasn’t enough, she's becoming increasingly haunted by childhood memories.
