Jeff Li lost his parents after his father was wrongfully accused of spying for China. Years later he was working as a double agent in Hong Kong and feeling the need for a change to cope with isolation and self-doubt. The year of 2019 presented opportunities for him to advance his CIA career and his relationship with his girlfriend who did not know about his secret occupation. Several assignments during this year placed Jeff on the scenes of police brutality against the protesters in Hong Kong and the track of international spies linked to the Taiwan presidential election. Jeff had the front row seat of witnessing the war between the powerful and the powerless and the ensuing divisions among his own family and friends, some of whom are well-known. When Jeff's uncle turned out to be a high-ranking spy for China, Jeff had to make a choice between loyalty and betrayal.

The author has made sense for me of what is happening in Hong Kong and what is at stake.
The author tells the story of the demonstrations that have been happening in Hong Kong, what has prompted them, and the reaction of the Mainland China government by using a character that was born in America of Chinese parents and is raised in Hong Kong after his parents untimely death.

I am not sure if this book was written by someone whose first language is not English, or if the author affected this through misuse of words and awkward sentence construction. I think it added to the atmosphere of the novel.

I received this novel through Goodreads in exchange for an honest review.
I encourage people to read this book for a better understanding of Hong Kong, China, and the world we live in.
