Challenges the Devil had ahead of him was going to be effortless, as with him he had a vengeance seeking soul, keen on being respected in the human world, where she was shunned for being barren. \tMariam Smith’s soul was aware of the perfect night, the Dark Night of Amawus, a legend brought by the early settlers in the tiny community of Momi Bay, a tropical paradise on the shores of the sunny Fiji Islands. Friday, the night of Amawus was upon them, and a few renowned witch doctors, warned the folks of the legend. Amawus, supposedly the night that many fear, would give rise to Satan, and to stop that from happening, voodoo rituals and sacrifices were being performed throughout the day by the true believers. What they didn’t know, was that Mariam’s soul is more powerful as it descends on the community. Maya Smith, a bubbly, young island woman, and her four best friends had a normal life until that dark night. Mariam’s shape shifting form appears, as they are assembled for the flag raising ceremony on the last day of their high school years. No one believes them, but Rosie Khan, the tomboy, knows what she saw, a man dressed in black, and she has the backing of Maya Smith and Elizabeth Quoro. It was that encounter, which put doubts in their minds about the legend, and as the day progresses, they are drawn towards deception when a strange black cloud catches their attention. Rosie’s suggestion of wandering out further than they had gone in the Smiths boat, was agreed upon without any debate, and they joked about a meeting with the devil. Their families trust them and believe their lies, as Maya and her gang venture out on the open waters of the mighty Pacific. It was the darkest night and they were enjoying it to the fullest, but it all changed at an instance, when the star gazer, Betty Chow, sees the glare on the ocean. At the same time, Rosie catches something huge on the fishing line, and the struggle with the fish leads them past the forbidden islands. It is not just the line, but the boat seems to have a brain of its own, and suddenly they find themselves on an enchanted island, something that seems unreal to them at that moment. Once on the mystical island, they have encounters with five shape shifting forms, and participate in a ritual, where someone, who they think is the Devil, has sex with them. They come across seven women dressed in red and black gowns, and among them is one who calls herself Mariam. She seems to enjoy everything and subsequently warns them, to keep everything a secret for three months. When Maya Smith wakes up, she finds the magic of the place gone, and wakes up the others. They head back home as the boat is still intact, but as they reveal similar dreams they each had, and the strange things happening around them, they differ in their thoughts. One thing they do agree on is the similarity between Maya and Mariam. In the meantime, in the community of Momi Bay, the dark night of Amawus comes and goes, leaving behind the signs of the highest tide. Maya Smith and her friends aren’t missed until ten in the morning. Three days of frantic search by the families with the help of the local folks, turns up nothing, but they are positive that the young women are out at sea. During that period of uncertainty, two well-known and respected figures in the community, Jagan, a profound elderly witch doctor, and Bella Don, a renowned psychic, join forces. Everything started on the night of Amawus, and the two are certain that it is the beginning of something sinister. The Smith’s house is chosen as the best place for the families to get together, and that suits perfectly for the spirit of Mariam Smith. Jagan and Bella Don perform different rituals and dig deeper, but they are spun further into the web of destruction. During the few nights of anxiety for the community, a different kind of terror is unleashed on the Smiths playground. Five, demonic, stretched out cats, known as devilcats in folklores, arrive from the ocean, something uncharacteristic of felines. Jagan and Bella knew then, that the felines had something to do with the disappearance. They encounter the creatures, face to face, but they vanish into thin air, leaving Jagan and Bella with more questions. When the young women arrive, they are shocked to find out that they have been gone for three days. Maya Smith, Rosie Khan, Elizabeth Quoro, Betty Chow, and Kusum Prasad, even under the pressures from the elders, bow to keep the secret of their whereabouts. It was a relief for the community of Momi Bay for the moment, but a terror is brewing, as Mariam Smith’s spirit returns with the young women. Bella Don and Jagan, rely on their deities, and Mariam Smith’s name surfaces. Later, they discover that Mariam is from the same bloodline as Mr. Smith. She was his great-aunt, who disappeared on a stormy night about a century ago, but nobody knows anything else. They compare Maya and Mariam, who could easily pass for twins, but are unable to figure out what kind of vengeance the spirit is seeking from the Smith family. \tLife gets back to normal for the community after that period of uncertainty. Days go by without any further supernatural activities, and beautiful Momi Bay sees better days. The same cannot be said about Maya Smith and her friends, as after the safe return, they choose solitude. They become unreasonably stubborn, and distance themselves from the very people who love them. Constant threats from Mariam’s spirit bring them closer, and they seek opportunities to be together more often. It is Maya Smith who changes drastically in every way, especially her wardrobe. She starts to dress like Mariam, and is often influenced by its spirit, as her nightmares continue, but Maya is still defiant. Some days she is herself and on other days, Maya becomes a total stranger, even to her lifelong friends. Her love for Kevin Brown diminishes with each passing day. Their real nightmares begin when after a month, Cecil Smith, Maya’s only sibling, and her boyfriend, Kevin Brown face horrific deaths at the hands of some animals, presumably believed to be the devilcats. Through lies, deceit and a sworn secrecy, the five are spun deeper into the web of the darker forces and a terror of unimaginable proportions is unleashed. Even with the tragedy around them, Maya Smith and her friends are defiant, and want to wait for the entire three months. It was Maya’s nightmare, where she saw the killings and the presence of Mariam Smith at the scene, which made the previous nightmares realistic. Missing their menstrual cycles, added more to their dilemmas, but they are still defiant. Often they ponder the consequences of revealing the secret, but Maya Smith and Rosie Khan always win the argument of keeping the secret. A few more months won’t hurt, at least that’s what they thought, even after realizing that they had brought along a destructive force from that journey. Jagan and Bella Don, could not shed any light on the tragedies at hand, and are unable to dig further into the dark secret of Momi Bay. Their abilities are diminishing as the evil spirit of Mariam gains more strength as it awaits the arrival. The community is plunged into further chaos as the devilcats terrorize again, this time not the mortals, but the dogs in the community. Everyone is aware now that something is out there, watching their every move, and the community is on high alert as the third month begins. Folks of the community come together and join forces with the few police, but are unable to find the culprits. Nothing has been solved and they don’t even know why the paradise is being terrorized. As the third month after that night of Amawus begins, Maya Smith and her friends start having a different set of dreams. Mariam Smith appears again and conveys a message that the time is coming soon. It becomes more ambiguous, but they still vow to keep the secret caged within. Exactly three months after the night of Amawus there is a strange feeling in the atmosphere over Momi Bay, and the day is hotter than ever. Smell of death lingers over the community through the day, and the elderly have premonitions for that night as the sun turns red at sunset, and an eagle shaped cloud covers Momi bay and plunges it into darkness, sooner than the norm. Maya Smith and her friends retire early that evening as certain tiredness is forced onto them. As the weary sleep, just before midnight, Mother Nature shows its ferocity. For many it is a magical display of lightning but the true believers are certain of a major catastrophe. Rumbling in the sky, and trembling of the ground, does not have any effect on the five friends who are having a new set of dreams. Abrupt silence falls just a little after midnight, and that’s when Maya Smith wakes up. She is horrified at the mess in between her legs, and fear grips the families again when the doctor suggests a birth of something. Except for the afterbirth, there is no sign of anything, either dead, or alive, at the five houses. Now Maya Smith and her friends realize what they have done, and the friendship starts breaking apart. Rosie Khan, Elizabeth Quoro, Betty Chow, and Kusum Prasad are ready to reveal everything, when confronted by the two witch doctors again. There is definitely something wrong with Maya, as after revealing Mariam’s name once and the daytime attack by an increased number of devilcats, she becomes stubborn and is alone in her thoughts. Everyone believes that Maya is possessed, and that’s when the secret of Momi Bay starts to surface, but just within the group of families. Births of some animals from the wombs of the young women, and the transformation of one such animal to human form, after coming out of Maya, leads them to believe, that Satan has been born. Now the witch doctors find out who the real Mariam Smith was, but it is too late. The mortals fail in their attempts and the legend of the dark night of Amawus comes to life. A new terror is unleashed as the Devil’s army, born from the wombs of mortals, turn against them and the little community is shattered, as it pays a hefty price for the wrongdoing of their ancestors. The secret of Momi Bay surfaces, but just for a moment, as the very people who reveal it, take it to their graves, except for Maya Smith. Mariam Smith’s soul wasn’t just keen on the vengeance, but it is eager to relive her life, and through who else, but Maya Smith, the only person who knows the dark secret of Momi Bay. For the ruler of hell, it is just the beginning, as he takes the first step towards his ultimate goal, after winning the first challenge with God Almighty, to be born through the womb of a mortal. All the prophecies come true, as the dark night delivers what the world was afraid of…The Prince of Darkness. The mythical, dark night of Amawus, and grim warnings of its consequences, do not deter Maya Smith and her friends from sneaking out onto the open waters of the South Pacific. The night begins playful and daring, but quickly digresses into a horrendous nightmare when the girls are faced with a series of strange encounters. Yet their nightmare only begins when the girls return from their ill-fated journey and realize that what they bring back to the little community of Momi Bay is the vengeful ghost of Mariam Smith. Shunned for being barren during her brief life, Mariam returns determined to unleash a terror of unimaginable proportions. \t Warned not to utter a word of their terrifying experience for a period of three months, the young women seek solitude, waiting for the time to elapse, unaware that the darker forces are gaining in strength, becoming even more powerful than the Island's most sacred witchdoctors. As the end of the three months approaches, something sinister begins to awake; something the whole world has forever feared... the birth of Satan as a mortal.
