Finding Grace
Charlie O’Brien is thirteen in 1960 when she discovers the aftermath of a violent crime in the forest outside of Norfolk Virginia. A stranger, Violet Marshall, happens upon the scene and offers help. In their efforts to track down the perpetrators and avenge the violence, they seal their friendship. Soon after, Charlie meets the rest of Vi’s family and learns of their mysteries and their secrets. In spite of the danger in their relationship, Charlie adores Vi and cannot abandon her. Through Charlie’s new–found friendship with Violet and her unique family, she begins to encounter life as they do. These experiences challenge her worldview, forcing her to confront the darkness in her community, her family, and herself. When the KKK threatens the Marshalls’ lives, Charlie must choose between keeping silent to protect her family, or defending the Marshalls, risking her very life in the process.

Finding Grace is a delight. Charlie, Violet, and other characters in this novel resonate with features that bring them to life at a time in history that is only too real. The struggles and challenges that Charlie faced over fifty years ago are still relevant in today's world. Congratulations to this talented writer for bringing an important message to readers via a real page-turner.

I couldn't put it down. Then it made me cry. I'm a grown man. This story is not for women only. You will be amazed at the journey you take with Charlie.

This is such a beautiful story with such great meaning. I was so excited to keep reading that I would stay up before going to bed and even read while walking my dog! Finding Grace is an easy read, and at the same time, it handles deep topics like bravery/integrity, suffering and hope in a well dimensioned and careful way. I loved the different and strong feminine/spiritual energies woven in, too. This book reminds me of why I want to keep honoring the compass inside me, even when it's difficult.

I loved this book. The story of the friendship between two teen girls unfolds in the south at the time of school desegregation and the county that fought against it by simply closing down the schools (I had no idea). I would not normally choose a story about teens nor about that time period, but I'll tell you, as I was drawn into the story I could not put it down, and was completely immersed emotionally by the end. Like the previous reviewer, I too cried. Since I'm a woman I'll admit the tears flowed down my face for pages and pages, not all sad, just deeply involved and touched. I chose fast for the ultimate pace of the book although the beginning was simply steady; by mid story I couldn't put it down and read into the night. I came to feel I knew each of the characters personally and would love to read a sequel because I want to know what happens to them next. They were vivid, complex and real. As this country struggles with the continuing issues of racism, Finding Grace is topical and inspiring, and simply a good read.
